Costs of Divorce
Professional Fees
Fees for professional legal and financial services vary across the country. You may be charged an hourly rate for a lawyer or solicitor to work on your case, or they may charge a fixed fee instead. Ensure you understand the pricing structure when undertaking professional advice.
Court Fees
Whether you choose to seek legal advice or not, you will still have to pay court fees to obtain a divorce. This is currently £550 in England and Wales. You can find up to date information about the costs on the gov.uk website.
Legal Aid
If you are on a low income or receive benefits, then you may be entitled to help with legal costs. This is known as ‘legal aid’.
Legal aid is available for cases that involve domestic abuse or child abduction. Read the latest guidance about legal aid on the gov.uk website and check to see if you qualify here.
